Reduce Downtime with Custom Kitting

We believe that manufacturing should be more flexible. So, we implemented the process of custom kitting, which ultimately helps you save money and increase productivity in the shop. We know, it sounds too good to be true, but it isn’t. Here at IMS, we are committed to making our customers lives easier. Interested? Let’s go over the What, Why, and How of custom kitting.

What Is Custom Kitting

Custom kitting is our highly specialized process of designing and constructing custom kits complete with all of the parts needed to create a finished product. Each of these kits is not only specific for each company, but for each product. Because of it’s customizable nature, it can truly be whatever you need it to be. It can be created to assemble 1 unit, 5 units, 15 units, etc. The kits can contain laser cut, formed, and even powder coated sheet metal parts. Essentially, whatever you need in the kit, we can put in the kit; that’s the benefit of them being 100% customizable, right down to the actual tote they are kitted in.

As with everything we do, the primary goal of custom kitting is to help empower your business to achieve all of your goals and become more efficient overall.

Why Custom Kitting

The idea of custom kitting was developed when one of our business partners was running into trouble assembling the pieces we had manufactured for them. If they wanted to make one unit, they would have to pull multiple pallets, costing them valuable time and money. Back then, it took them nearly all day just to pull 4 orders. We worked together to find a solution, and that we did. Custom Kitting. We started preparing heavy duty totes with the exact number of parts they needed to assemble a unit.

They immediately noticed a decrease in non-value added activities. But the benefits did not stop there.

They no longer had to pay to remove pallets, they no longer had random partial kits lying around, and there was significantly less paperwork to do since the PO’s did not consist of each individual piece in the kit, but rather just 1 tote.

Likewise, they can now easily plan production based on kit quantity now instead of trying to track down and count random pieces. Their production leads can now spend more time on managing and less time pulling parts.

Reduce Costs by Minimizing Space

The shape of the totes are easily stackable and eliminate the need to haul off pallets, another money saving benefit. When you have used up the totes, you can simply stack them and send them back here for us to refill, creating a seamless production system.  The next batch of parts can be ordered with a standard purchase order, or the totes can even serve to trigger the next batch, which can eliminate even more administrative tasks for you!
